Gettysburg Reenactment Draws Large Crowds

The annual reenactment of the Battle of Gettysburg (July 2-4) drew crowds of 50,000 to 100,000 – not counting the 5,000 reenactors who participated in the actual battle. "I've been doing this for over thirty years," said Brian Melby of Port Washington, Vermont, "and this is by far the largest gathering I've been at." Melby credits recent movies like Glory and Ken Burn's Civil War Documentary for increased interest. "People are fascinated by the period." agrees Dorthy Sawyer, "I was peppered with questions all weekend."
